School becomes more sensitive to students’ trauma

Anderson High School has a plan to address weighty topics, including dating abuse, sexual assault, and suicide.

On Jan. 3, administrators invited Expect Respect counselors to help teachers increase their confidence in addressing sensitive issues in the classroom. Counselors encouraged them to listen, be supportive, and to link vulnerable students to Expect Respect support groups and other services on campus.

The following week, 70 students from Anderson’s Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Squad learned how to facilitate classroom lessons on healthy boundaries and helping friends in abusive relationships.

Students and adults are working together to create a more trauma-informed campus for everyone.
